#1 – Guard Up

Your most important self defense technique is to constantly keep your Guard Up. Always be aware and alert of your surroundings. Whenever you encounter an imminent threat to your safety, this is your 1st line of defense.

Keep your palms up and open and ready them at chest level.

The Guard Up serves two purposes:

  • It gives you a layer of defense to protect your face and torso from oncoming strikes.
  • You’re in a much better position to launch quick pre-emptive attacks.

This posture can also lure your attacker into a false sense of security.

It is quite a deceptive posture as your attacker may interpret this as a sign you are weak or willing to give up. But that is how you launch any attack with the element of surprise.

#2 – Poke-Eye

PAIN

9

– Very painful
– Impairs vision

WINDED

0

– Attacker will not
be winded

RECOVERY

7

– Attacker may need
30 seconds to recover

(Front Defense)

The 2nd self defense technique is, called Poke-Eye (in Chinese that means “bastard”). With your hands up you can launch an attack into your assailant’s eyes.

Use two fingers to poke your attacker in the eyes. You can also use all your fingers to gouge at the eyes.

The more fingers out, the better.

Use a swift and loose movement so the attacker has no time to block your attack. This will create immense pain to your assailant’s eyes and disorient them for quite some time.

(Rear Defense)

But, what if someone comes from behind you and puts you into a headlock?

Again, use your fingers to poke your attacker in the eyes. Your hand should be able to wrap around your neck to land fingers in eyes. Use any millisecond of time you buy to escape the headlock quickly.

This is an effective approach to diffuse the situation if you don’t know any advanced jiu-jitsu moves.

#3 – Headbutt

PAIN

7

– Somewhat painful
– Stuns & disorients

WINDED

0

– Attacker will not
be winded

RECOVERY

4

– Attacker may need
10 seconds to recover

(Front Defense)

The 3rd self defense technique is, the Headbutt. If your attacker is grabbing you from the front, this is a good time to use the headbutt.  Launch a surprise attack by leaning back and cracking your attacker in the nose.

Another soft spot to aim for are the lips. This will inflict the most pain to your attacker and minimal damage to yourself.

Avoid striking your attacker’s skull as both of you may get a concussion together. The trick to making this work is to look at the target (nose, mouth) you’re going to headbutt.

(Rear Defense)

If the attacker grabs you from the rear, you can use the headbutt again.

The same rules apply. Aim for the nose or the mouth. Use your hard skull to damage the soft bone and tissue of your attacker’s nose. Use any millisecond of time you buy to escape the headlock quickly.

#4 – Groin Kick

PAIN

10

– Very painful
– Incapacitates

WINDED

5

– Attacker will be
gasping for air

RECOVERY

10

– Attacker may need
60 seconds to recover

The 4th self defense technique is, the Groin Kick. For urban self defense, this is the go-to skillset. As kicking someone in the groin hurts like hell.

All it takes is one swift kick to the family jewels to incapacitate your attacker. This low blow also knocks the wind out of your attacker.

Be sure to throw in a knee to the groin as well if the attacker is right up in your face.

#5 – Solar Plexus Strike

PAIN

9

– Very painful
– Difficulty breathing

WINDED

7

– Attacker will
struggle to breathe

RECOVERY

7

– Attacker may need
30 seconds to recover

The 5th self defense technique is, the Solar Plexus Strike. Clench your hands into a fist while sticking out your front two knuckles.

Strike fast and hard into your attacker’s solar plexus.

Aim for the soft spot under the rib cage. This is a nice and juicy solar plexus target.

Your attacker will soon be gasping for air and lose the strength to fight you momentarily.

#6 – Elbows

PAIN

7

– Somewhat painful
– Stuns & disorients

WINDED

0

– Attacker will not
be winded

RECOVERY

4

– Attacker may need
10 seconds to recover

The 6th self defense technique is, to use Elbows. If your attacker is close enough to kiss you, he is close enough for you to launch an effective elbow.

Choose the uppercut elbow. This can cause some serious hurt and pain.

Be cautious of using the Outside Elbow.

If your attacker is taller than you and have his hands on you at shoulder height, landing an outside elbow may prove difficult.

So hit him where you have an easy target and drive the elbow up between his arms. This will be just as painful as a hard headbutt.

#7 – Heel Stomp

PAIN

5

– Somewhat painful
– Impedes chase

WINDED

0

– Attacker will not
be winded

RECOVERY

4

– Attacker may need
10 seconds to recover

The 7th self defense technique is, the Heel Stomp. Use the balls of your heels to strike hard and fast into your offender’s toes.

This will send a sharp pain to your attacker and limit his ability to chase you if you start running. You may even break a couple bones or two.

Do not use your toes to strike downward. Toes are not effective.

#8 – Use Waves/Combos

The 8th self defense technique is, to use Waves and Combos. One strike may not be enough to disorient and escape your attacker.

Use many strikes to deliver compounding damage. This will buy you more time and options to make your next move.

Usually 2-3 strikes to vital areas will inflict more than enough damage needed.

#9 – Escape

The 9th of self defense techniques is to Escape. With all the time you create for yourself damaging your attacker, it’s time to run.

The purpose of self defense is to defend yourself. Not to become the aggressor.

You don’t want to get into a drawn out tussle with your assailant. As they may be able to eventually recover and launch a more aggressive counter attack

It’s even possible for attackers to come with one or more accomplices beside them. So you don’t want to stick around and wait multiple attackers to jump into the scene.

Do your damage and disappear!

What to do next?

While it’s impossible to predict when or where you’ll have to use these self defense techniques, having a skill set you can rely on will ensure your chances of walking out of dangerous situations alive.

Remember to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are. The sooner you can identify any threat means the more time you can buy to formulate a game plan.
